Since August of 2006, over 25 million people have switched over to Google Apps for business, education, and government.  While this user-base was growing, Google has played it smart and kept things simple.  For the past 4 years when a Google Apps user logged in they were only able to access Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sites, and a few other services for their domain.  However, many found this was an annoyance since a regular “@gmail.com” Google Account had access to much more. Today that has all changed, Google has unlocked over 60 apps for Google Apps users and in their own words “swing the floodgates” open for achievement with the suite.

What apps are available?

This is by no means a complete list as not all apps are available in the free version of Google Apps, but we do know the ones below are!  The full list can be found here.

My Google Apps looks the same, where in blazes are the new apps?

The new Google Apps is considered an entire new version of the suite.  Existing customers have the choice of whether they’d like to switch over to the new infrastructure, and when they’d like to do it.  When you are ready, your Google Apps domain administrator can transition everyone over – but be aware you’ll lose access to any Extra Google Storage, Health, PowerMeter, Profiles, and any Offline Gmail that isn’t backed up will be lost.  Anyone opening a new Google Apps won’t have to worry about this because from now on new accounts will automatically use the latest version. If you’ve been waiting for something big to happen with Google Apps, this is it.  MrGroove has already written up a great guide for anyone interested in “Going Google” and with this new influx of Apps available here is your opportunity to test it out and see what you think.
