There have been a lot of different ways that people have been able to get the icon, but just the other day, a couple of Microsoft Community Moderators/MVPs posted an easy fix to the problem.

Make the Windows 10 Upgrade Icon Display on Windows 7 or 8.1

Download the win10fix_full.zip from Dropbox. You will need a compression software utility like 7zip to extract the bat file to a convenient location on your computer. I have scanned this with VirusTotal – which checks it against 57 antivirus utilities, and zero malware is detected.

Right-click on the extracted file: win 10fix_ful.bat and select Run as administrator.

Now follow the onscreen instructions. First, the introduction of the app, and disclaimer (make sure to read it carefully.) To accept the disclaimer, press any key to continue. I have run this on two Windows 7 computers and one Windows 8.1 system, and it worked every time. However, if you are hesitant to run this for any reason, simply don’t. Wait until Microsoft comes up with a fix, or wait until the official launch on July 29th.

Next, you will see the following screen about qualifications.

On the next screen, select 1 > Check Update Status and hit Enter.

Wait while your updates are checked and that you have the correct one installed, which is KB3035583.

Press any key to return to the main menu and this time hit 2 > Quick-Method #1 [JC from answers.microsoft.com] and hit Enter.

This screen is where the Registry will be changed. When finished, you should see the Windows 10 upgrade icon in your system tray after a couple of seconds.

If it worked, close out of the Command Line window and use it to reserve your copy of Windows 10 upgrade.

It will also allow you to check you to check if your PC is capable of running Windows 10.
